I've seen it in law school, med school, all kinds of graduate and professional programs. Folks tend to fall into a pattern, with the supporting partner taking a backseat to the "rising." Before either of them really notice it, the once equal relationship has become unequal, and often the "rising -" be more interested in his/her peers colleagues and less interested in the more pedestrian life led by the supporting partner. The supporting person gradually has little in common with the "rising -" and what had once been a shared goal is now the source of different life trajectories. What I disagree with, completely, is that an unmarried person is more likely to do this than a married person. The number of divorces that occur during/after grad or professional school can attest to the folly of that view.
most people don't need therapy. some do. others could benefit from it. i take issues with comments like this: "Therapy is a waste of time and money. The ear of a good friend is better therapy than any therapist could provide." this is ignorant and simply untrue. therapy is not for everyone there are ways to heal and self-improve. but if you've never been in therapy, then i don't think you can critisize it. and one bad experience w/ therapy, doesn't mean that the practice as a whole is not tremendously valuable to.
